Pre-Start Preparations

Session 1: Introduction to Ecotheology, Standards of Education, Relational Learning for Climate Justice, Explanation of an eco-spiritual biography

Session 2: What is environmental justice? What do we mean? Organize by concepts and scale

Session 3: In-Depth and Intersectional Approaches to Ecology and Climate Justice Concepts

Session 4: Case studies of Environmental Ethics and Moral Frameworks, Examples of Local Action and Resistance

CERTIFICATION

This course is one of four courses in Pathways' faith-based climate justice certificate, It is designed specifically for theological education, led by practitioners with proven track records in national church leadership, community organizing, and academic excellence. Anyone can take the course. In addition to the four courses, certificate participants also participate in an annual, year-long Climate Justice and Spiritual Resilience cohort offered concurrently with the four courses.

Who is the program for?

Newly emerging climate justice advocates who want to fine-tune their knowledge base while also learning and sharing skills for resiliency.
Clergy, lay leaders, and community organizers who feel called to environmental ministry but want comprehensive formation in both the theological foundations and practical applications of climate justice work.
Long-term climate faith-based leaders of all backgrounds who desire a refresh in both their learning and spiritual energy. Including ecumenical and interfaith partners committed to collaborative environmental action rooted in spiritual practice and biblical wisdom.

Delia is the Professor of Environmental Science at Ferrum College. She brings over two decades of professional experience in university-based research and teaching, primarily focused on issues related to climate & environmental justice, water quality, and natural resource policy and economics. She received her BS in Regional Development from the University of Arizona and an MS & Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Washington, specializing in Western involvement in the Russian oil industry in Western Siberia.

The Rev. Melanie Mullen is the newly appointed Interim Director of the Ministry Feasibility Study for East of the Anacostia for the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. She most recently served as the Episcopal Church’s Director of Reconciliation, Justice & Creation Care, where she was charged with bringing the energy of the Jesus Movement to the world’s urgent concerns. Prior to her work on the Presiding Bishop’s staff, Melanie was the Downtown Missioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, VA, where she led a historic southern congregation in missional outreach, civic engagement, and reconciliation work.
