The Episcopal Church Welcomes ALL.

Embracing Gender Complexity was created to ensure this happens in our interpersonal relationships as well as in the cultures and practices of our faith communities. Integrating the voices and stories of transgender and non-binary people and their families, this course explores the changing landscape of gender expression, the ways gender has been interpreted in Scripture and Theology, the elements that make a truly welcoming and supportive experience of community, and areas where advocacy is most needed. Our goal is to help faithful people and church leaders understand and embrace gender diversity as well as to ensure our practices are truly welcoming in our congregations, dioceses, provinces, and the wider church.

The course was developed in response to 2022 General Convention Resolution D030 in which the Episcopal Church affirmed its commitment to welcome and support people and communities of diverse genders, including transgender and non-binary. The resolution calls for \"support [of] congregations and dioceses in becoming welcoming and affirming of people of diverse genders, with resources and training materials that are theologically and scripturally grounded, culturally and linguistically accessible to our diverse congregations, and include voices and stories of transgender and non-binary people and their families.\" The resolution also called for resources \"to support congregations in their community outreach and advocacy work in solidarity with transgender and non-binary people in our wider communities.\" This course was designed to respond to that call.

COURSE STRUCTURE\n

6-week blended (synchronous and asynchronous) online course.
2-5 hours each week for independent study (reading, watching, listening, and/or writing) and text-based online discussion (asynchronous). You can choose how much of the material you want to engage as you prepare for the live session dialogue.
90 min Integration Seminars (Days and Times TBD) at the end of each weekly session.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:\n

Articulate your spiritual journey particularly reflecting on your embodied experience in relationship with gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation and gender perception.
Create a brave and accountable spaces for learning and growth.
Explore the changing landscape of LGBTQ+ identities.
Articulate the difference between 1) sex assigned at birth, 2) gender identity, 3) gender expression, and 4) sexual orientation.
Recognize societal assumptions/stereotypes based on gender perceptions, the worldviews that inform them, and ways to re/direct them.
Recognize sources of divergent religious perspectives about people who are transgender and gender expansive.
Understand various forms of address (names, pronouns, honorifics) and demonstrate appropriate use of requested forms.
Articulate scriptural and theological basis for embracing gender diversity.
Identify practical solutions for welcoming and supporting transgender and gender diverse persons and their families personally, in your congregation, and in your community. In collaboration with people who are transgender and gender diverse:
* Create a welcome/support/advocacy plan that identifies resources, practical solutions, and a timeline for you and/or your community to implement that demonstrates welcome and support of people who are transgender and gender-diverse;
* Identify ways to provide spiritual and practical support to persons who are discerning their gender or are in the process of transitioning as well as their families;
* Identify potential community outreach and advocacy work at the local, state and federal level to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity or the expression of one’s gender identity and to treat physical violence inflicted on the basis of a victim’s gender identity or expression as a hate crime (GC 2009-D012);
* Develop a personal/congregational library of resources that may include general information, a directory of local contacts, and liturgical resources (i.e. taking a new name).

Steve is a consultant with FaithX working with redeveloping churches and new missional initiatives and as a leadership coach. He has worked in local churches, served on the staff of the Diocese of Massachusetts, and worked as a consultant for The Episcopal Church (missio:Engage!). Prior to FaithX, he served as Executive Director of the South Coast Mission Hub in New Bedford, MA, a collaborative of Episcopal churches and community organizations working together to build generative neighborhoods through Asset-Based Community Development. He is also the producer of a new storytelling initiative in The Episcopal Church called StoryPaths highlighting church/ community transformation.

Hailey McKeefry Delmas, a deacon, has been listening to and telling the stories of people for the past three decades. Now, as an educator, she is excited to help students understand the world and its inhabitants in new ways--to encounter ideas that expand the world and bring people together.

Hailey is Bexley Seabury's Director of the Deacons Formation Collaborative and Educational Technologist. She has a BA in English Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz and a Certificate of Christian Studies and a Certificate of Diaconal Studies from the Mercer School of Theology in Garden City, New York. She was ordained to the Diaconate in June 1999. She has been a chaplain and engages in leadership around hospice, mental health, LGBTQ+, or immigrants/asylum seekers... or wherever else God leads. She lives in Aurora, Colorado.
