At the end of this course learners will have a generalist’s command

of the history of the Episcopal Church, including the Anglican Communion from the English Reformation to the present,
of the centrality of Baptism and Eucharist for Episcopalians in pursuing our mission,
of our commitment to the ancient orders of bishop, deacon and priest in supporting and leading us in our mission, and
of how we Anglicans organize ourselves as the church locally, regionally, globally and ecumenically.

Learners will develop fluency in the identity and vocabulary of the Episcopal Church, and so be better equipped both for further coursework and for their present ministries.

The Rev. Dr. Matthew Cadwell is enthusiastic about bringing history to life and uncovering hidden stories. He is Vicar-in-Charge of the Old North Church, Boston’s oldest church (est. 1723) famous for its role in the American Revolution and Paul Revere’s midnight ride. Ordained in 2004, he has served in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada. Prior to his appointment to Old North, he served 12 years as rector of Emmanuel Church in Wakefield, Mass.

Matthew holds a BA in Religion and Scandinavian Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College; the MDiv from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass.; and a PhD from the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto, with specializations in Anglican history, theology, and ecclesiology. For a decade he was a lecturer in Anglican theology in the Faculty of Divinity at Trinity College in the University of Toronto.

In addition to teaching in the Pathways for Baptismal Living program, Matthew is a core faculty member in the diaconal formation program in the Diocese of Massachusetts. His publications include book chapters on Richard Hooker and William Temple, histories of Episcopal Divinity School and Emanuel Church in Wakefield, Mass., and several reviews. Outside church and classroom Matthew enjoys watercolor painting, exploring Scandinavia, and speaking Swedish.
